Fish muruku is an inspired and improved version of the traditional Indian snack, Muruku. Initially, Indian people mixed pea flour with Indian spices to form a dough, which they then shaped into spirals or wheels before deep-frying to a golden yellow, resulting in Muruku. Due to the cultural influences of Malaysia’s diverse population, this distinctive snack has become well-known and very popular in the Malaysia-Singapore region.
In the early days of Malaysia, people mostly lived along the coastal areas, relying on fishing for their livelihood and creating various seafood-flavored snacks. The original Indian snack, Muruku, gradually evolved into today’s fish muruku under the influence of different ethnic tastes, also gradually adopting different shapes. With the wonderful combination of split peas and fish flavor, these crackers offer a unique savory and crispy taste. The improved fish-flavored pea crackers have become a national snack in the Malaysia-Singapore region.
